So tonight Derek Webb did an event in Nashville. I decided to go because I have always liked Derek, but never really seen him in concert and was hoping tonight was a concert. When I got to The Rutledge the line was long and it was a couple of hours before the event. I met two nice guys from Atlanta in line and once in we grabbed a table together. When walking in there was a huge screen set up and no sound equipment so I was a little bummed.
Derek came on stage and brought out the president of INO Jeff Moseley to talk about the controversy surrounding Derek’s new album. After Jeff left the stage Derek introduced the making of video ‘Paradise is a parking lot’ which is an hour long film. It was a very amusing and interesting look at the behind the scenes making of ’Stockholm Syndrome’.
About half way through the movie I noticed a stir right outside and decided to check on twitter. As soon as I logged on to @ssyndrome I saw the tweet
FOLLOW THE BARCODE TO THE HEART. YOU WILL BE HANDSOMELY REWARDED.
then also saw:
THE BARTENDER CAN SEE IT. MAKE THE CALL.
My mind was going crazy trying to find the barcode. I knew where (or who) the heart was but just needed the bar code. I finally saw an out of place poster for French Bulldogs and the telephone number at the bottom looked like a bar code. I examined the item closer and saw it was a 888 number. I quickly placed the call only to hear the following:
Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

I went to the girl at the bar and she handed me the wrist band.
After the show I waited out front with 16 other people and everyone was looking for our next clue (barcode we thought). We all saw the white van pull up about the same time with the ‘White Noise’ signs. So we all got in the van and headed to an unknown location. Needless to say there was a ton of tweeting going on and pictures and speculation as to where we were going and what we would be doing!

We headed to east Nashville. We pulled into an alley and said our gate was to the left.

When we walk through the gate Derek is waiting to meet us.

So we head into his studio to listen to the new album.

After listening to the new album Derek answered questions and took pictures. Then we load back on the the White Noise bus to head back to The Rutledge to go our separate ways. We also got the new album (Yah!) and also we will be getting a special package in the mail with more goodies from the album.
All in all it was a great night!
Here are some photos taken from the event. More to come. Be sure and visit my Flickr page for all the photos (coming very soon)

So Jeff Moseley and Derek talked about the controversy? What did they say? Was this all a sham? My guess was yes, but since he brought Jeff up there to talk about it then maybe it wasn’t. Let us know.

It was real. There was some questionable content that the record company said could never come out on their label.
The stuff that followed was as Derek put it ‘they run a lemonade stand and were making lemonade out of lemons”.
There will be several versions of the album to come out. Derek will release a digital “true” copy with all the tracks. The record label will release an album in September without the track.
Hope that helps clear things up

It was legit. I think among Derek’s bigger fans, this whole episode did indeed generate more anticipation about the CD, but these people were going to buy it anyway. If it were just a marketing ploy then then the controversial song would have remained because who is gonna flock out to the store to buy a controversial CD that’s been cleaned up?
I have last night’s introduction/explanation recorded on my phone’s voice memo…if I can only figure out how to move it from phone to micro card…
Wow, Reba, sounds like you had quite the night. I knew something was going to happen, but I had to hurry out of town after the Rutledge to get home to the babysitter. Thanks for posting about it, though.

A clever marketing ploy to sell more records? Even if it is nothing wrong in that!
What a night though, must have been exciting all piling into the van! lol!

JT, I would love to have a copy of that voice memo recording if you can get it onto your PC.

Here’s an audio transcript of a good bit of what Moseley said.
[On "the song"]
Moseley: ‘You know, we had a little disagreement. I think what I want to say is, I respect Derek, I respect his art, I enjoy having him [as] a part of the INO family and on the INO roster. But we obviously hit an impasse, and in the midst of the last couple months, there’s been a lot of interesting things go on, and I’m here to tell you that they were all true. I heard somebody say that this really was all a big publicity stunt—not true at all. What it is is an example of grown men who respect each other who disagree, and as Derek has said, somehow take some lemons and a little water and sugar and come up with some lemonade. Right?’
Webb: ‘Yep.’
Moseley: ‘We seem to have done that throughout our history together. We’ve been banned from more Christian bookstores than you probably even know exist. [Laughter, cheers] And, you know what, this record will probably continue that trend. But we’ve come to a compromise—and I appreciate Derek’s part in this—and there are going to be two versions of the record. The record will be releasing, and it will be coming out September first. So we’re very, very pleased about that. Derek’s gonna kind of tell you a little bit about the differences [between] the two things. But I just wanted to say thank you so much for being interested, even though as I read the blogs, and I read some things, a good part of that probably wasn’t real flattering on my part. But I just want to say thanks for your interest and for being here and being supportive of Derek. We think Derek’s a really important artist; at times he’s an agent provocateur. Someone told me, I think it was really about journalism, but we say this about music and art, that hopefully what we do will comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. And Derek knows how to do the latter very well. [Laughter] I love the guy, thank you for coming, September the first, Stockholm Syndrome, two different versions! And I’m sure he will tell you how you can get the one that he calls the “authorized version.” [Laughter] Thank you.’
