Here are a few pictures from tonight. More pictures and review to follow tomorrow when I am not so overwhelmed by the massive amounts of people in a small venue with no air.

Review:
Last night She & Him played to a sold out/standing room only show at Mercy Lounge. I had bought my tickets back on June 4th so I was ever so ready for this show. I had never been to a show at Mercy so to get there and see the place and to find out it was standing room only — I was a little amazed.
The opening act Charlie Louvin was well a little bit much for my taste. I grew up on old country music and I just could not get into his act. He was crude and mumbled his way through the show. I was very glad to see him exit the stage.
She & Him put on a good show. I think Zooey Deschanel seems more comfortable behind a movie camera than on a stage though. She did start to ‘let go’ a bit after a few songs, but you could tell she just was not totally comfterable up there. M. Ward rocked out on guitar and faithfully stood by Zooey’s side for the show.
Musically they did a great job. Her voice carries through to the stage almost equal to that of a digital recording. The strangest moment came when they let their backup singer have center stage with a song she wrote. I do not remember the song because the whole time I was worried the singer would fall over – she seemed to a little bit more than tipsy. It was an odd moment (not to be outdone by the opening act).
All in all I am glad I went. Zooey is one of my favorite actress’s so it was cool to see her in such a different setting than a movie screen. I am not sure I would go back though. Mercy Lounge was too hot and overcrowded for my taste. Everyone by me was sweating like crazy and trying to fan themselves (granted I was on the stage). I was so ready to leave that I left during one of their last songs so I could beat the crowd and get home.
Lighting was horrible for the show, but I did manage to get some photos. Here are my Flickr pics of She & Him and here are a few sample photos:

Ohhhh, I’m so jealous! I bet that was an AWESOME concert! They are tops on my list of people to see in concert.
Tomorrow night I’m going to the Ten Out Of Tenn concert here in Indy with artists like Katie Herzig, Matthew Perryman Jones and Trent Dabbs. Should be awesome!
I loved Zooey in “The Happening.”
WOW…she looks like a young Linda Rondstadt. Beautiful!
Brad – it was a good show ….just HOT! I almost went to the ten show here, but I had just gotten back in town. Butterfly Boucher is awesome..always wanted to see her! Let me know how it was
Chris – That is one of the few movies I have not seen her in. I was going to wait till video.
Ginger – She is very pretty. Her and her sister defiantly got the pretty genes..lol
I was also at the show and I think you nailed it when you said she wasn’t comfortable. My roommate and I debated about it on the way home… she thinks it’s just her personality… she’s normally the cold, detached character and we think that maybe that’s really just her. I think she was a little frightened, though. Either way, she wasn’t all that engaging on stage BUT her voice and her musical instincts MORE than make up for it. There are so many facets to her voice that you just hang onto every note just to hear what it’s going to sound like. Sometimes like Ella Fitzgerald, sometimes like Judy Garland, sometimes like Joni Mitchell… all the time incredible. I actually think she sounded more comfortable in the songs and the music than on the recording… she’s had time and practice living with the material and really letting it because a part of her.
Don’t let that experience sour you on Mercy Lounge. It’s actually one of my most favorite venue’s in town. I’ve seen hundreds of shows there and last night was the most packed I’ve seen it. It’s a great place where you don’t have to wait long for drinks, there are places to escape for a few, it’s smoke free, the sound is great and it’s all around vibey–come on, there are TRAINS right next door!
Sorry to hijack the comments… I wanted to write about it, but I only write about sex on my blog
I think she WAS uncomfortable as were we all. The first thing she said when she came out was “It’s like a sauna in here”. Not to mention people were like 2 feet from her AND certain people with flash cameras CONTINUED to blind here after she politely and amusingly “dared” them to take fewer. She was also in the middle of a 3 night blitz of shows in 3 different cities and was greeted with triple degree heat the minute she came onstage. I would not have been comfortable either.
