This is part three in my series of the top 10 people to listen to in folk/country/bluegrass genre. Lori McKenna is an artist I have listened to for several years. I still don’t have all her music, but it is on my “to get soon” list. I have her latest album ‘Unglamorous’ and one of her older ones ‘The Kitchen Tapes’.
The Kitchen Tapes was one of those albums. Lori was first introduced on my blog back in 2005 when I posted the lyrics to her song ‘How to Be Righteous’.
Lori crafts her words to flow so beautifully with her melodies. I loved reading her bio when I was writing this article. She is a mother of 5 (yes 5) from Massachusetts. She has written songs for Faith Hill and Sara Evans.
Lori McKenna’s latest album is ‘Unglamorous’ which is also her first album put out on a major label. The album is full of jems, but my favorite song is one called ‘Falter’.
I went to high school with that kid
He was even strange back then
The type whose eyes don’t leave the floor – blend in with the cementWell, I felt so bad for that kid
One day I saw his face turn green
And as he tumbled to the floor the thought of reaching out never occured to meChorus:
Why don’t we open up
Knowing that we all falter
When will we learn – to reach out for each otherHe lived out on the edge of town
And I’m pretty sure he had a brother
It seemed that boy could walk for days I suspect to avoid his motherAnd I always knew he had it bad
Tougher than any of us others did
Still I never asked him how he was doing what could I do – I was just a kidChorus
So, now he’s the new town bum
He talks to himself and picks up cans all day
And when my kids ask me about him – what’ll I say, what’ll I sayWhy don’t we open up
Knowing that we, we all falter
And when will we learn
When will we learn to….
Open up
Knowing that we all falter
When will we learn
(When will we learn)
I said, when will we learn
When will we learn – to reach out for each other
