Tonight I went to see Brooke Fraser play at 3rd and Lindsley here in Nashvegas. It was Brooke’s first time playing here and my first time seeing her.

After tonight I can say one thing…I like her even more! So many artists can not carry an acoustic show, but she not only carried it but blew everyone away.

Her humor carried the show along with those killer vocals. I can not remember laughing so much at a concert.

If you get the chance to see her in concert…GO! For those who have not heard her do yourself a favor and go buy the album (yes it is in the US iTunes store now!)

A few pictures from last nights Lighting Of The Green. Unfortunately these are some of the worst photos I have taken in probably ten years. I will blame it on the freezing cold weather and injured wrist that kept my camera shaking.

Recently I sat down and read “For Parents Only” by Shaunti Feldhahn and Lisa A. Rice the book was an interesting read. I have never read a parenting book because I do not have children, but I have worked with pre-teens and teens for many years. My context for this age group is all with youth work in the church. The kids I worked with were mainly kids who grew up in the church with the occasional friend brought to a youth party thrown in the mix.

One reason this book was fascinating to me was because the research in the book is spot on with what I have seen and heard from working with teens. Which suggests to me that all the research was conducted in a fair manner and kids were being open and honest.

In particular I love the way that the charts were laid out in this book. The research is presented in a neat and tidy order and easy to get the point of the data.

Rice and Feldhahn present a very logical and practical solution to getting along with your kids:

    1.be the parent
    2.listen to them
    3.stick to your guns

While each of these steps is laid out with much detail in the book the basic guidelines are simple points that often can be overlooked.

That is the beauty of this book. The beauty lies in looking at simple ways to be a good parents and the practical advise to help you achieve those goals with stories and scenarios to help along the way.

This is a practical book with steps to help you navigate the teen years with your kids. It guides you through the mirky waters of being overbearing and being a parent that your kids really need. I often saw parents that were too over protective, parents that just wanted to be friends and then those parents that their kids actually respected them and somewhere in this book that balance is found.

Teens need a strong and supportive parent. The book puts it this way:

“They didn’t want the fake cool mom who was trying too hard to be cool. And they actually loved the fact that they had to abide by the rules.”
