Here are a few pictures from tonight. More pictures and review to follow tomorrow when I am not so overwhelmed by the massive amounts of people in a small venue with no air.

Review:

Last night She & Him played to a sold out/standing room only show at Mercy Lounge. I had bought my tickets back on June 4th so I was ever so ready for this show. I had never been to a show at Mercy so to get there and see the place and to find out it was standing room only — I was a little amazed.

The opening act Charlie Louvin was well a little bit much for my taste. I grew up on old country music and I just could not get into his act. He was crude and mumbled his way through the show. I was very glad to see him exit the stage.

She & Him put on  a good show. I think Zooey Deschanel seems more comfortable behind a movie camera than on a stage though. She did start to ‘let go’ a bit after a few songs, but you could tell she just was not totally comfterable up there. M. Ward rocked out on guitar and faithfully stood by Zooey’s side for the show.

Musically they did a great job. Her voice carries through to the stage almost equal to that of a digital recording. The strangest moment came when they let their backup singer have center stage with a song she wrote. I do not remember the song because the whole time I was worried the singer would fall over – she seemed to a little bit more than tipsy. It was an odd moment (not to be outdone by the opening act).

All in all I am glad I went. Zooey is one of my favorite actress’s so it was cool to see her in such a different setting than a movie screen. I am not sure I would go back though. Mercy Lounge was too hot and overcrowded for my taste. Everyone by me was sweating like crazy and trying to fan themselves (granted I was on the stage). I was so ready to leave that I left during one of their last songs so I could beat the crowd and get home.

Lighting was horrible for the show, but I did manage to get some photos. Here are my Flickr pics of She & Him and here are a few sample photos:

With a whole lot of “puussshhh” the Church Basement Roadshow came rolled into Nashville last night. This was by far the best book tour I have ever seen. It was just genius.

Tony Jones, Doug Pagitt, and Mark Scandrette are on tour together promoting each of their new books. I got to the church early to help set up as part of the Nashville Cohorts. I got to spend a little bit of time talking to Doug Pagitt about his book ” A Christianity Worth Believing” which is one of the best new books I have read in a VERY long time.

Before the show the guys were pushing the “balm of Gilead” as a cure all elixir. Even sprinkling it on heads. In this photo Dixon gets his head sprinkled with oil.

With revival music and lots of good humor we heard of the troubles of 1908.

As the night moved on each of the guys took turns reading from their books and sharing stories of how faith is not one sized, but comes in many shapes, forms, movements, and ways.

It was a great night filled with a whole lot of laughs.
