We have reached the middle of counting down the top 10 singers to listen to in the folk/bluegrass/country genre. (These are in no certain order except who I think to put on the list). Artist number 5 is singer/songwriter Tift Merritt.

I first heard Tift several years back when I was in a huge alt. country stage. I don’t really know much about her and did not find much information on the internet. So what I do know is she has several albums out that are just incredible. My personal favorite album is “Bramble Rose”.

I have not yet heard her latest album which she wrote most of it in Paris, but from what I have heard it sounds incredible.

Number 6 in my top ten people to listen to in the folk/bluegrass/country genre is someone most people are very familiar with – Shawn Colvin. I grooved along back in the 90’s to ‘Sunny Came Home’ and had the album that I listened to a few times. Once the songs charm wore off the album got sold and I never really listened to Shawn again.

Earlier this year I went with a friend to 3 girls and their buddy tour and Shawn was one of the performers and I walked away totally in awe of her live. The next day I went out and purchased 5 Shawn Colvin albums and was blown away by each album. The artistry she exudes is something that is so lacking in today’s music. Honestly I am not sure how to even begin to describe lyrically what she does. The best thing to do is let them speak for themselves.

I try to say the words, but they don’t come out right
It’d be much easier if you would just stay the night
That look in your eye’s got me thinking something’s wrong
Just like that, you’re gone

How could I bee so blind, how could I be such a fool?
Cause in this game of love, there ain’t no damn rules
That look in your eye’s got me thinking somethings wrong
Just like that, you’re gone

I treated you so good, I gave you everything that I had
Now give me one good reason why I deserve to be treated this bad
That look in you eye’s got me thinking somethings wrong
Just like that, you’re gone

If lovin’ is the game, you can, you can count me out
I’m tired of being a fool, I know what you’re, you’re all about
There’s not surprise that the look in your eye’s telling me it might be time to move on
And just like that
And just like that
And just like that I’m gone

If you know Shawn Colvin from Sunny Came Home, but have not listened to her newer stuff be sure and check out her stuff at http://www.shawncolvin.com/

I am almost to the middle of counting down the top 10 singers to listen to in the folk/bluegrass/country genre. I have arrived at number 7 (these are in no certain order except who I think to put on the list). Artist number 7 is husband/wife duo knows as “The Weepies”.

The Weepies are one of those bands that I am not really sure where I first heard them, but they have been in playlist for quite a while. Their quirky mix of melody and lyric make for a bubbly fun party in your ears. The first song I heard by them is still one of my favorites ‘Somebody Loved’.

Rain turns the sand into mud
Wind turns the trees into bone
Stars turning high up above
You turn me into somebody loved
Nights when the heat had gone out
We danced together alone
Cold turned our breath into clouds
We never said what we were dreaming of
But you turned me into somebody loved
Someday when we’re old and worn
Like two softened shoes
I will wonder on how I was born
The night I first ran away from you
Now my feet turn the corner back home
Sun turns the evening to rose
Stars turning high up above
You turn me into
You turn me into
You turn me into somebody loved
Somebody loved
Somebody loved

The Weepies just released a new album, not too long ago, I have not heard it yet but plan on getting it as soon as I can.
